A chapter from The Diaries of Sir Moses and Lady Montefiore 1890

by Mark Turkienicz, Canada

Approximately 15 years ago, I was in a antique store in Florida.
I came upon a section of the store containing old books.
One in particular, caught my eye.
Upon realizing that Safed was mentioned, I immediately bought the book.

Only when I got home and reviewed it carefully, did I realize the gold that it contained !
I’ve photographed the entire chapter pertaining to the story involving Shmuel Abbo.
Here it is: a chapter from “The Diaries of Sir Moses and Lady Montefiore“, Volume 2
Published in 1890 , Edited by Dr. Loewe.

The Diaries reference a situation whereby Rabbi Shmuel Abbo was summoned to Jerusalem to meet Sir Moses Montefiore .
An accusation by the Austrian consul was laid against the Jewish community of Safed. The accusation concerned the governance of the community against a woman who had been accused of ‘unbecoming’ behavior.
After Rabbi Shmuel Abbo met with Sir Moses, the Jewish community of Safed is absolved and vindicated in totality of their treatment and governance of the subject Jewish woman.
A fascinating read!
enjoy!!
